I am sure that Vučić will prevent new incidents

We must respect Muslims, we must respect mosques as we respect our monasteries and churches. This is their country as well as ours. There is no one stronger in this country, everyone is equal before the law, his name was Asmir or Predrag. This is one of the many strong messages delivered by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic during his visit to Priboj on Wednesday, but also one of the most read on portals in the Raska region and neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The leader of the Social Democratic Party of Serbia, Rasim Ljajic, says that two levels are important for the relations between Bosniaks and Serbs. He says for “Politika” that these are the relations between Belgrade and Sarajevo, because the good relations between Serbia and Bosnia relax the relations in Sandzak to a great extent. “The second level is the relations between the two peoples in Sandzak and I must say one thing that few people in Serbia know – we are in Sandzak in the 1990s, and the war was on the border, all that time, and later, there were fewer interethnic incidents than which was in Vojvodina, which is known as an oasis of multiethnicity and harmonious life. That relationship between people remained even after 2000 “, says Rasim Ljajić.

He emphasizes that tensions in this part of Serbia increased some time ago, when a group of people, including police officers, sang insulting songs about Bosniaks, which, he emphasizes, was a big surprise for him. He says – if they had asked him a few months ago, he would have said that it was impossible. “I am astonished by a series of incidents that I would never minimize, regardless of who did something and on what occasion, to still paint yourself, to brag about it and to play on social networks, that is a serious problem. It is, therefore, neither an affect nor an incident, but a serious signal for a disturbed atmosphere, without going into who more or less contributed to it. That is how important Vučić’s visit is. The first man of the state goes to talk to Bosniaks and send soothing and relaxing messages that are accompanied by practical actions, primarily by state bodies “, states Ljajić.

He adds that the basic message was that, apart from building a common life, there is no tolerance for those who provoke the incidents that took place in Priboj, regardless of whether they are Serbs or Bosniaks. “If such a message is sent and if it persists, I am sure that there will be no incidents. I am sure of that, because there is a basis for affirming and improving these relations. Let’s be clear, this is neither brotherhood and unity, nor a kozara circle, the differences are great, even animosities, but people have learned to live with it and have learned not to do anything bad to others. Let alone insulting someone’s feelings in this way “, points out Rasim Ljajić.

An analyst at the Center for Social Stability, Srdjan Graovac, says that Aleksandar Vučić’s visit to Priboj had a dual character. For our paper, he says that the priority of the arrival of the President of the Republic in that town was certainly to reduce the tensions caused by chauvinistic and anti-Muslim outbursts of individuals, manifested in singing songs with inappropriate and extremely derogatory content. He adds that the Raska region, or Sandzak, is the home of everyone, both Orthodox and Muslims, both Serbs and Bosniaks.

“Such and similar excesses, from whichever side they come from, represent unacceptable and dangerous outbursts, because in this interethnic-sensitive climate, ‘too hard words’ can easily become a trigger for raising tensions, but God forbid, for provoking conflicts. Any instability in Serbia does not benefit Serbs or Bosniaks, or any other citizens of our country. That is why the quick and sharp reaction of the President of Serbia was necessary in order to stabilize the situation as soon as possible and to send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated in Serbia and that those who incite interethnic hatred or intolerance will be punished, “Graovac said.

He points out that, in addition to stabilizing the situation in the Raska region, Vučić certainly sends a clear message, not only to Bosniaks in Serbia but also to those living in BiH, that Serbia and Serbs are not enemies of Bosniaks, but closest neighbors, those with whom you share for centuries. a common language, the climate in which you live, and often destiny. This move by Aleksandar Vučić was more than necessary at a time when political tensions in BiH were raised to the highest level, when the situation was extremely inflammable, and war became a word that is often mentioned.

“All the facts indicate that this year could be crucial when it comes to resolving the internal organization of BiH.” Pressure from outside, especially from Washington, assures us that the United States will try to play a key role in that process, as a global power, to try to force all three sides in BiH to reach an agreement that would finally make the country functional. That is why we are witnessing these ‘difficult words’ and the intensified national rhetoric of political representatives, both Bosniaks and Serbs and Croats. It is obvious that this sharp narrative is in the service of the strongest possible positioning of political elites on all three sides before perhaps the fateful negotiations that are expected in 2022 “, says Graovac.

He emphasizes that the President of Serbia understood well, and what he insisted on since 2012, when his party came to power, that a kind of agreement must be reached between Serbs and Bosniaks. That is, that the stability of that country depends on the two most numerous peoples in BiH, and that without compromise on the way of institutional functioning of that country, there is no stability in BiH or in the region. Any solution that would not be part of the compromise of the two most numerous nations would have a temporary character, and the agony of the dysfunctionality of that state would only continue.

According to Graovac, an agreement between Serbs and Bosniaks is possible only if the political elite in Sarajevo accepts the outstretched hand from Belgrade and is ready for a compromise. Only if both sides give up their maximalist goals, Bosniaks will abandon this uncompromising policy of unitarization of BiH, and Serbs will give up stories about secession and leaving BiH. It is obvious that there is a will on the Serbian side to take that path, however, on the Bosniak side, there is still no interest. There are still high expectations in Sarajevo from US President Biden and his administration. Dreams that the “American cavalry” is returning to the Balkans to complete the work and organize BiH at the will of Bosniaks still exist. “Since it is clear that the United States will not be able to force Serbs to give up RS, at any cost, Bosniaks will sooner or later, and I hope sooner, you have to accept the key fact “, concludes Srdjan Graovac.
