Germany on the brink of recession

FRANKFURT – Germany is at risk of recession as Europe’s largest economy declined in the last quarter of 2021, while the rapid spread of the omicron strain corona virus is discouraging people from shopping and traveling.

Production in Germany fell between 0.5 and one percent in the fourth quarter of last year, the state statistics agency Destatis announced today.

The forecast is not the brightest for the first three months of 2022, as a result of which the German economy could soon enter a recession.

A recession is considered to be a decline in economic activity in at least two consecutive quarters.

The German economy recorded a growth of 2.7 percent last year, which recovered from the fall of 4.6 percent in 2020, when the restrictions due to the pandemic were the most severe, reports AP and Beta reports.
