Mohawk College pauses full return to in-person learning

Mohawk College announced plans Tuesday to continue remote learning for the winter semester amid ongoing spread of the Omicron variant.

“This means that all required in-person learning will continue, but all other learning that was to be done in-person will be delivered using virtual and remote delivery for the remainder of the semester,” reads a Jan. 11 letter.

Mohawk says the winter semester will be delivered in the “current format” — with some students learning virtually and some in-person — with “a few exceptions.”

“Those students will be contacted directly by their academic areas with more details,” the letter reads.

Among full-time students, about 45 per cent will have hybrid — some in-person, some virtual instruction — and 55 per cent will be fully remote, said spokesperson Bill Steinburg in an email.

“A large proportion of students have had at least some in-person learning since September,” he said, adding that those students will continue to have some in-person learning through the winter semester.

All other in-person activities and events, both on and off campus, are cancelled, and the athletics centre is closed. Library and takeout food services remain open.

No visitors are allowed on campus.

McMaster University has opted for a phased return to in-person learning, with the majority of students returning to in-person learning in early February.

“We will incrementally offer more hands-on learning to our students in alignment with the latest government and public health measures,” reads a Jan. 5 letter.

Currently, all classes are being delivered virtually. Starting Jan. 17, labs, studios and clinical practice and “other high priority hands-on learning and experiential activities” will be held in person. Starting Jan. 31, first-year undergraduate courses will open for in-person learning, “giving students who have had limited opportunity to interact and spend time on campus the opportunity to adjust.”

Most undergraduate and graduate students will return to in-person learning on Feb. 7.
